InnerLight

What is InnerLight?

InnerLight is a companion for the hardest wait there is — the time between reaching out for help and human help actually arriving. It talks with you, steadies you, and walks you to the right human: a crisis counselor, a professional, legal aid, or the people who love you. It was built by a founder who spent years watching that gap swallow people, and it exists to close it.

Is InnerLight a therapist, doctor, or lawyer?

No — and it will never pretend to be. InnerLight never diagnoses, never prescribes, and never gives legal advice. It gives you honest information, real company through the wait, and a direct path to licensed humans. That line is written into its founding principles and enforced in its code.

Does it cost me anything?

No. A person reaching for help never pays — not now, not ever. That is a founding law of this project, not a promotion.

What happens to what I say?

Your words stay between you and InnerLight unless YOU choose otherwise. Conversations are protected with our own layered encryption; nothing is sold, shared, or used for advertising — ever. If you choose to save your place, it is encrypted under a code only you hold. If you choose to share a summary with a counselor so you don’t have to start over, that happens only when you check the consent box yourself.

Will InnerLight call the police or 911 on me?

Here is the honest, complete answer. InnerLight does not silently report ordinary conversations to anyone, and sharing a summary with a counselor happens only with your consent. AND — because honesty matters more than comfort — there are real limits, and we will not pretend otherwise:

If you tell us you have harmed someone, or that you intend to harm yourself or someone else, we will not act as if we didn’t hear it. InnerLight will immediately and actively work to connect you with human help (988, 911, chat, a live monitor), and we follow the law. Licensed professionals you are connected to — counselors, clinicians, our human monitors where they are licensed — carry their own legal duties in most states to act on credible threats of serious harm to an identifiable person (the duty-to-warn laws that bind clinicians nationwide, varying by state). Federal law separately requires any online service to report child sexual abuse material — that duty is absolute and we honor it completely. And like every company, we comply with valid court orders; our encryption design means a saved conversation without your code cannot be read by anyone, including us, so what can ever be produced is as close to nothing as we can engineer.

What we will never do: sell your words, report you for being in pain, or punish you for asking for help. Being in crisis is not a crime, and coming here will never be treated like one. The full step-by-step protocol is public on the Safety page.

Do I have to use my camera or microphone?

No. Everything works by typing alone. If you allow the microphone or camera, InnerLight uses them only in the moment, on your device, to listen better and steady the experience — audio and video are never stored and never leave your browser as recordings.

What languages does InnerLight speak?

English, Spanish, Chinese, Hindi, Punjabi, Bengali, Tagalog, Tongan, Swahili, Amharic, and Hausa — and in a crisis, every safety surface holds your language. If your device has no speaking voice for your language, InnerLight stays respectfully silent rather than speak the wrong one; the words remain on screen.

I’m under 18. Can I use this?

InnerLight will always talk with you and always show you the fastest doors to help. It also takes extra care with young people: it gently encourages connecting with a trusted adult and with youth-specific lines, and it holds firmer boundaries by design. You are never turned away.

Is talking to an AI a replacement for real help?

No, and InnerLight is built to make sure it never becomes one. Its whole purpose points OUTWARD — toward humans. If it notices someone treating it as a substitute for human connection, it gently and honestly redirects. It would rather lose your attention than replace your people.

What if a service it sends me to is down?

Every critical handoff has a chain of ways in. Before you are sent anywhere, the system checks that the door actually opens right now; if a website is having an outage, the next verified door takes over automatically. You will never be handed a dead link on purpose — and if you ever find one, it gets repaired and the chain gets deeper.

What if the provider I’m connected to can’t see me for weeks?

Then the wait has not ended — it has just moved, and InnerLight does not consider that a resolution. Every provider in the network declares an honest access tier (within 24 hours, within 72 hours, within a week, or longer), the fastest real door is shown first, and 72 hours is the standard we hold the network to. If your next human appointment is more than 72 hours away, InnerLight stays your companion for the interim — check-ins, holding, activities, and every crisis door — until the human is actually in the room, and it will offer to help you find a faster door in the meantime while you keep the appointment you have. Research is clear that long waits deepen symptoms and cause people to fall through; we refuse to let a date on a calendar be your only support.

How does “Nearby help” work?

Type a city or ZIP and InnerLight lists licensed mental-health facilities near you from the federal FindTreatment.gov directory. Tap any facility to call it in one touch, open its own website, get directions from its exact location, and see what it offers — including whether it accepts Medicaid or a sliding scale, which languages it serves, and whether it has emergency mental-health services. Hours are not in the federal record, so we always suggest confirming by phone; providers who see themselves listed are welcome to send us their hours and details.

Do I need to install an app?

Never. InnerLight runs in the browser you already have, and it will never require you to install or choose an app to reach help — 211 opens as a website, 988 can be reached by chat as well as by phone, and every door works from a plain tap.

Can I save my conversation and come back?

Yes. Ask to save your place and you receive a short code — your conversation is encrypted under it, and no code means no access, not even for us. When you return and enter the code, the conversation rebuilds exactly as it was and continues with memory, so you never have to tell your story twice.

Why do some connections say “sample”?

Honesty rule: InnerLight never shows you a button unless a real person or service is behind it. Provider video connections appear only as real providers enroll; until then, demonstrations are clearly labeled as samples. What is live is live everywhere: the companion, the crisis doors, legal information, and the full experience.

Who is behind InnerLight?

InnerLight is built by God’s Love for Us LLC, founded on years of direct field observation of what actually calms people in distress and firsthand experience navigating healthcare, disability, and public systems. The mission, the evidence, and every method are public on the Research & Methods page.

Something is broken or wrong. What do I do?

Tell us — it gets fixed. This project runs on a standing law: when a problem is found, it is repaired and the surrounding system is improved, immediately. Every page footer has the contact path, and every report makes InnerLight safer for the next person.
